The Seedling Project, 2019, native flowering plants, drawings on card, dimensions variable, exhibited at Critical Animals, This Is Not Art Festival, The Lock Up, Newcastle 2019

The Seedling Project is a site specific installation by artist Alexandra Mitchell of native flowering plant seedlings particular to the Hunter Region. The installation formation attempts to mirror the shadows made by the roof above the Exercise Yard at The Lock Up.

Chris Stark, Chief Executive of the Committee on Climate Change (United Kingdom) states that ‘there’s a great deal of interest in technologies that might remove carbon dioxide…but the first thing to say is that we already have these technologies and they’re called trees.’ This quote is threaded through the installation as a reminder that these seedlings will one day grow into plants or trees that will reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Audience members were invited to take a seedling or two home with them at the end of the installation.

As the seedlings grow into plants The Seedling Project will continue after Critical Animals 2019 and into the future.
